For the average domestic pool or spa, 14 days is the perfect amount of time between testing your water balance. Suppose the water experiences heavy usage or extreme weather conditions, such as a heavy downpour. More frequent testing may be needed to confirm that the chemical levels remain within the recommended guidelines.

Test pH Levels

Firstly, you’ll need to test and adjust the water’s pH levels accordingly. The ideal range is between 7.2 and 7.6. Maintaining pH within this range makes the water comfortable for swimmers and efficient for chemicals to work their magic. If the pH skews too high or low, add a neutraliser. We recommend using sodium bisulphate or muriatic acid to lower pH levels and sodium carbonate to raise them.

Test Alkaline Levels

Managing the alkalinity of your water serves as a buffer to prevent dramatic swings in pH levels. Aim for alkalinity levels in the comfort zone of 80 to 120 ppm (parts per million). If the alkalinity needs adjusting, you will incorporate sodium bicarbonate to increase it or sodium bisulphate to decrease it. This saves you from constantly re-adjusting the pH and helps with the longevity of surfaces and equipment.

Test Calcium

Prevent plaster damage and scale formation by monitoring calcium hardness. Ideal calcium levels range between 200 and 400 ppm. Elevate calcium hardness by adding calcium chloride. To lower it, you may need to partially drain and refill it with softer water. Attending to chlorine or bromine levels is essential to preventing bacteria and algae.
